Periodontal (Gum) Treatments

Screening for gum disease is a routine part of a dental assessment. Your dentist will perform a BPE (Basic Periodontal Exam) where the mouth is split into sextants and each area given a score out of 4 (4 being the worst). Ask your dentist to provide more information on this if you wish to know more.

There are two types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis.

Reversible inflammation of the gums.

They will look red and swollen, bleeding easily when irritated or brushed.

Simple treatment involves oral hygiene instruction and possibly a simple clean.

Several different types exist and is can be classified as early/moderate/advanced/aggressive.

Risk factors include family history, smoking, diabetes and ethnicity.

In addition to inflammed gums there is the loss of the boney support around the teeth making teeth loose and more sensitive.

Long term is can result in loss of teeth affected.

If untreated the bacteria will increase in number, creating hard deposits around the gums and below the gum level on the root surface. Pus, ulceration and bleeding are common signs of gum disease.

Successful treatment involves a motivated patient and thorough professional cleaning. Many gum disease patients will be advised to routinely see a dental hygienist for long-term maintenance of the condition.
