How dental implants work?
A small cut is made into your gum, the implant which consists of a small titanium rod is fitted to your jawbone and a replacement tooth is fitted on top.
Over time the rod and your jawbone fuse together so that your tooth implant looks and feels like one of your own teeth. There are several types of dental implants.
We can talk through the options and discuss which are right for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
IS THE DENTAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE PAINFUL?
Patients report experiencing some discomfort after the procedure, but this can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Local anaesthesia is also used during the procedure to minimise any pain or discomfort and at Dentalkind we offer safe IV sedation for particularly nervous patients.
HOW LONG DO FULL MOUTH DENTAL IMPLANTS LAST?
Dental implants are designed to be a long-lasting solution to missing teeth. By caring for them properly you can expect your implants to last for many years, possibly even a lifetime.Just as with natural teeth, proper oral hygiene is important and we recommend brushing and flossing regularly. You should also visit us for regular dental check-ups and dental hygiene appointments.
WHEN MIGHT I NEED A DENTAL IMPLANT?
Implants are used to replace a missing tooth, or to replace a tooth that needs extraction. If a gap is left from a missing tooth, not only can it look unsightly but the teeth on either side can tip into it over time, causing problems with the bite and, in some cases, gum disease. Whilst partial dentures can be used to replace missing teeth, implants are a long-term, fixed solution.
IS FITTING A DENTAL IMPLANT UNCOMFORTABLE?
As with all dental care, modern techniques are quite comfortable. The initial part of fitting an implant requires surgery to insert the root. This is usually performed with a local anaesthetic but we also offer safe sedation if preferred. It is not uncommon to feel some soreness or swelling following the procedure, but this should quickly ease.
CAN MY DENTAL IMPLANTS BE AFFECTED BY GUM DISEASE?
Yes, the gum surrounding the implant is the same as that around your original teeth, so gum disease could occur if your oral hygiene is lacking. You need to maintain good brushing, flossing and regular dental hygiene appointments.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Oral hygiene for dental implants is similar to caring for your natural teeth. An implant can last many years provided it is properly looked after. Your dentist and hygienist and Dentalkind will show you the most effective home-care solutions.
