There are three main types of filling material we use in dentistry.

Glass Ionomer

Properties

  • Adhesive
  • Tooth Coloured
  • Contains Fluoride
  • Medium-term

Uses

  • Children’s fillings
  • Non-load bearing areas
  • Provisional fillings
  • Bases for large tooth coloured fillings

Composite

Properties

  • Adhesive (very)
  • Tooth Coloured (very)
  • Can be layered to give excellent aesthetics, “Italian style filling”
  • Long-term
  • Needs a skilled dentist to place predictably
  • Often require a rubber sheet to isolate teeth being treated

Uses

  • Cosmetic fillings
  • Direct “1-visit” veneers
  • Sealing in early decay
  • Core material for crowns/bridges

Amalgam

Properties

  • Metallic filling consisting of an alloy of mecury, silver, tin and copper
  • Excellent history of success and safe to use

Uses

  • Small to medium sized filling in posterior teeth
  • Core material for crowns/bridges
